2011 UK Census

Census 2011

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the first outputs for Census 2011 on 16th of July 2012. Key findings for Newham are detailed below:

  • The 2011 population estimate for Newham is 308,000
  • Largest population increase of all London Boroughs: Approximately 64,000 people since the previous 2001 census.
  • Total Occupied Households: 101,500
  • 90% Household response rate.

The 2011 Census was carried out on 27th of March 2011. It involved around 25 million households across England and Wales. The Census created a large amount of data for small areas in London, which is helpful for local authorities like Newham to target resources in the most effective and efficient manner. The population count from the Census provided the best estimate of Newham’s resident population, and was used by Government for funding purposes.
