Health workout

The status of our health is dependent on many factors including:

- Individual lifestyle factors e.g. diet, exercise or smoking
- Social and community networks e.g. support from families, friends
- Socioeconomic and cultural environment e.g. education, employment status

Cancer Mortality rates are per 100,000 persons at all ages under 75 years

There are more than 200 types of cancer, each with different causes, symptoms and treatments. Approximately, 285,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK. Cancer is the number one fear for the British public, topping the list over Alzheimer's, heart attack and terrorism.

Like the national trend, cancer is one of the biggest killer diseases in London and in Newham. Cancer mortality in Newham is higher than the London average. However, due to preventative measures, this rate is decreasing as depicted in the table above. Nevertheless, there is local agreement that more needs to be done to reduce cancer related deaths in our communities.
