There were 35,490 full time equivalent pupils attending 89 maintained primary and secondary schools in Newham in January 2008. This section looks at attainment in Newham by pupil and by school at GCSE, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 levels and compares results to London pupil and school attainment levels.

The percentage of 16 year olds achieving 5+ GCSE grades A* to C has increased every year since 2003. The academic year 2006/07 sees this percentage at 55.6. Still lower than the London average, which stands at 60.8%, the London rate has also increased consistently since 2003. 2006/07 attainment results for GCSE at grade A* to C are now DCSF finalised figures.

High attainment levels for all 11 – 14 year olds at Key Stage 3 are an important part of the Government’s agenda for transforming secondary education. Challenges at Key Stage 3 are particularly demanding. These are vitally important years for laying the foundations for life-long learning and influencing the crucial decisions pupils will make at age 14. 2006/07 figures are DCSF finalised.

Percentages of Newham schools achieving Key Stage 3 level 5 English showed a sharp increase between 2002 and 2003 followed by a slight dip the following year. Since 2004 attainment results in Newham schools have been improving steadily. However during the academic years 2005/06 and 2006/07 attainment in Newham schools improved only slightly, rising from 87.7 % to 93.8% in 2006/07.

The percentage of Newham schools achieving Key Stage 3 level 5 Maths has vastly improved from 2002/03 and even reached 100% of schools during 2004/05 and 2005/06, however most recent results for 2006/07 have shown a slight dip. The percent of London schools achieving high attainment at Key Stage 3 has been improving steadily and is now at just under 100% of schools.

The percentage of Newham schools achieving Key Stage 2 at level 4 in Maths has shown an inconsistent pattern. From 2002 attainment levels in Newham had been rising but in 2006 levels dipped slightly. In London over this period attainment levels have risen overall.
